I arrived to Thanksgiving dinner with a Masha in hand as a gift for the host and hostess.  The kitchen was bustling with excitement as final preparations for the feast were being made.  In the corner of the kitchen I spotted a huge bowl of lumpy mashed potatoes with a potato encrusted Kitchenaid mixer sitting beside it.

I asked the hostess, Christina, what I could do to help.  She directed me towards the lumpy mashed potatoes with the Masha in my hand as she handed me an apron to wear.  I gladly accepted the challenge of plunging the Masha into a cavernous bowl of lumpy potatoes.  You see, I had never used the Masha with so many potatoes before so I honestly did not know what to expect.

The problem with using a mixer or a stick blender on mashed potatoes is that it rips up the starch grains of the potatoes, turning them into a glue like substance.  This is particularly true of stick blenders.  The Masha does something completely different.  It’s like a potato ricer and a low speed, gentle hand blender all at once.  It pushes the potato slowly through the mesh and creates a perfect mash every time.

I have to admit that the Masha strained a little bit to get through these potatoes but ultimately, it did a great job!  The potatoes went from lumpy to fluffy and smooth in just a few moments.  Masha saves the day!
